Used Transmission Buyer Guide

What to verify, what to inspect, and which warranty terms actually protect you.

  1. 01

    Identify the transmission code

Confirm transmission family (e.g., 4L60E, 6L80, ZF8, Allison) and not just "automatic" or "manual."

  2. 02

    Match bellhousing & input shaft

Donor must match engine bellhousing pattern, input shaft spline, and torque converter (auto) or pilot bearing (manual).

  3. 03

    Verify control module compatibility

TCM / PCM programming, solenoid pack revisions, and tap-shift options affect drivability.

  4. 04

    Inspect for internal failure signs

Burned fluid, metal debris on the pan magnet, slipping under load, and harsh shift complaints.

  5. 05

    Review warranty language

Look for parts-only vs labor-included terms, freight responsibility, and proof-of-installation requirements.

  6. 06

    Confirm freight & core terms

Core charges, return windows, and freight damage liability differ significantly between suppliers.
